About the Sacramento County Superior Court

The Sacramento County Superior Court, or alternatively the Superior Court of California, County of Sacramento, has jurisdiction over Sacramento County, serving a population of over 1.5 million and encompassing 994 square miles. It is located in the middle of the 400-mile-long Central Valley, which is California's prime agricultural region. The County is bordered by the counties of Contra Costa and San Joaquin to the south, Amador and El Dorado to the east, Placer and Sutter to the north, and Yolo and Solano to the west.

In its mission statement, the SAC Superior Court states that they are dedicated to “providing fair, equal, and impartial access to justice by resolving and adjudicating legal matters to ensure and protect the fundamental rights for all.”

To serve its large population, the Sacramento Superior Court operates 14 divisions, including the Civil, Criminal, Family and Children, Interpreter Services, Juror Service Center, Juvenile, Landlord/Tenant, Probate, Restraining Orders, Small Claims, and Traffic Divisions. The court operates its divisions out of six separate locations.

The Gordon D. Schaber Sacramento County Courthouse at 720 9th Street, Sacramento, CA 95814, houses the Court’s main administrative offices, trial courtrooms, the department of the Presiding Judge, and the general civil and criminal case processing support units. This courthouse hears matters relating to general civil trials (excluding unlawful detainer cases, small claims cases, and family relations matters), felony and misdemeanor trials (including criminal pretrial matters, DUI cases, and arraignments), and general civil pretrial motions. The Lorenzo Patiño Hall of Justice houses both the Sacramento County Superior Court and the Sacramento County Main Jail. The Superior Court at this location handles felony and misdemeanor pretrial departments (known as the Home Court departments), and also serves as the Domestic Violence Court and Drug Court. The Carol Miller Justice Center houses the divisions that hear traffic, small claims, and unlawful detainer cases. Sacramento County Superior Court Divisions

Appeals Division

The Appeals Division handles appeals of all the cases in the Sacramento Superior Court. The civil, misdemeanor, and felony appeals are filed in the Gordon D. Schaber Sacramento County Courthouse, while traffic and unlawful detainer appeals are filed at the Carol Miller Justice Center before being transferred to the Gordon D. Schaber Sacramento County Courthouse.

The unit responsible for the filing of appeals in family law and probate matters is located at the William R. Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse. Appeals in juvenile dependency matters are filed in the William R. Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse and appeals in juvenile delinquency matters are filed in the Juvenile Courthouse. A small claims appeal is considered a “trial de novo” or “new trial,” and can be filed at the Carol Miller Justice Center.

Civil Division

The Civil Division of the Sacramento County Superior Court handles and manages general civil matters.

Probate Division

The Probate Division is responsible for overseeing the distribution of the assets of a person who has died, the administration of living and testamentary trusts, and choosing a person to oversee the finances of elderly people who require assistance.

Interpreter Services Division

Interpreter Services are available to parties and witnesses involved in Sacramento County Superior Court cases. Court staff can make court interpreters available to the parties and witnesses for courtroom proceedings in all case types and for case-related activities, such as mediations and self-help workshops. These services are free for parties.

Juvenile Division

The Juvenile Division operates out of the William R. Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse, which handles the Juvenile Dependency cases, and the B. T. Collins Juvenile Justice Center, which handles Juvenile Justice matters.

Landlord/Tenant Division

The Landlord/Tenant Division handles unlawful detainer cases. Cases with damages equal to or less than $25,000 are heard at the Carol Miller Justice Center and cases with damages of more than $25,000 are filed with the Civil Division at the Gordon D. Schaber Sacramento County Courthouse.

Small Claims Division

The Small Claim Division hears small claims cases at the Carol Miller Justice Center Courthouse.

The Traffic Division handles vehicular infraction cases. This division allows in-person or online appearances via the internet, using Zoom. Related matters are heard at the Carol Miller Justice Center in Room Number 100.
